"Gentlemen do it too!"
Its not only male celebrities, actors, and politicians that sit in a makeup chair before making a public appearance. More and more men today are not shy about being fashionable, styling their hair, whitening their teeth, plucking their eyebrows, or even wearing makeup. It's no surprise that with modern society's emphasis on youth, perfection, and physical attraction, women aren't the only ones who want to accentuate their best facial features and hide blemishes or imperfections.
A few of the most common issues that men have with their skin are the occasional breakouts, dark circles under the eyes and as men have almost 20% thicker and oilier skin than women most find that shine is a problem too. A combination of hectic schedules, jet lag and constant partying all add to the problems of eye bags and breakouts leaving most men wanting a simple solution.
If you are aiming for a flawless, au naturel complexion, follow Metrosexual 'style icons' such as David Beckham and Robbie Williams and stick to the basics. With a quick brush of bronzer, a dab of under-eye concealer and a sweep of anti-shine powder - you really can look younger and healthier, achieving instant results, whilst boosting your confidence.
Essential steps for the modern man
1. Exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin is essential for ridding the surface of dead skin cells and helps to even out the skin tone whilst brightening the complexion. Scrub your face using an exfoliator with a little warm water, rub your face very gently in a circular motion, rinse with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
2. Moisturise. Choose a moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type, one with added sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. You can also purchase mattifying moisturises which help to control shine as well. Apply to your face and neck and allow the moisturiser to absorb into your skin before proceeding to the next step.
3. Apply Concealer. Choose a shade that matches your complexion, mix a little bit of concealer on the back of your hand. Using a finger gently dab it onto the centre of a blemish and lightly blend to the outer edge patting in a gentle circular motion, then blend the concealer outward into the skin. Do not rub!
4. Anti shine powder - This comes in two forms, loose powder and pressed powder. loose powder will appear lighter and pressed powder will generally give more coverage. Dust it lightly over your forehead, either side of your nose (this is know as the T zone and is generally the oiliest part of the face where shine appears).
5. Bronzing powder - Use a good quality bronzer and just brush a sweep of the powder over the areas the sun would fall naturally. Deepen your colour by applying additional layers of bronzer.
6. Wear Lip Balm. Choose a clear or neutral coloured lip balm that you can use throughout the day. Not only will it give your lips a smooth appearance, but it will also prevent them from getting chapped.
